venetia_sassy: (101 Dalmatians // happy puppies!)
We had buffalo meat pies for dinner tonight and they were delicious! I wouldn't have realised they weren't regular beef if I hadn't already known but they were really nice pies. Next market, I think I'll get a few frozen ones for exhaustion night dinners.

Didn't fall asleep for ages last night, got up after a couple of hours to head off to the market. It looked like it might rain at first but then it cleared up and warmed up to the point where Mum was saying, "Oof, it's a bit warm!"

I looked at her, "And who's been complaining about the dreary weather for the past few weeks?"

She replied, "I was complaining about the grey and the wet, not the cool!"

I could only shake my head and laugh.

We bought plums, baby chard, mini pumpkins, capsicums, sugarsnap peas, mushrooms, eggs, Jersey milk, chocolate truffles, sausages and a pot of coriander. And the pies of course. At the mushroom stall, they had some delicate pink oyster mushrooms I hadn't seen before. I exclaimed over them and the woman added a few to the mixed bag of exotics I was buying, which was very nice of her.

We bought some French Toulouse (pork) sausages from a stall which sells haggis and black pudding, made by a nice young bloke with a definite Scottish accent. I tried a bit of black pudding - flavour was okay but I wasn't sure about the texture. But he also sells pork & black pudding sausages which we might try next time. We were also tempted by the sausages at the Angus beef stall - the samples were delicious - but we thought one lot of sausages at a time was enough (so no duck this month.)

We tried some buffalo jerky at the new buffalo products stall. The jerky was really nice (and strong!) but I don't know when I'd eat jerky. They also sell steaks and buffalo milk cheese and gelato. There were some fabulous samples at the gourmet French stall next to it but we were running low on funds at that point. Next month!

Another new stall - freshly made waffles. I definitely wanted one - but after we'd shared a gozleme and tried various samples, I had no room. Next month!

We took a few tickets in the chocolate wheel which was having its last spin just before we were leaving. We went over and they called on Mum to spin the wheel - and guess whose number came up! Mum laughed and said I'd better claim the prize. We won a sparkly address book and a bag of produce - silverbeet, lettuce, carrots, butternut pumpkin, apples and some corn - which I have not cooked on the cob before so another new thing to try!

Dog report: we saw a red Kelpie, what was probably a Coolie x Kelpie, patted a couple of Cavalier King Charles spaniels, a black and white Papillon, a sweet little grey Maltese x Shih Tzu who'd just had a summer clip and was all soft and silky. There were repeated pats of a very pale Golden Retriever who was quite young and very friendly. She'd worked out a strategy for getting more pats from seated people when her owner was trying to walk past - she'd lie down! The owner just laughed and tugged her back up again but it was very funny.

Post-market, we stopped by the library - I hadn't been in a bookstore or library since before Christmas! Not right. Easily came up with ten books to try, mostly new authors ... then we came home and I fell into bed until dinner time, sleeping straight through a thunderstorm.

Food and dogs and books. That's a good day. *g*
