Day 3

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

A friend recently hooked me up with Netflix and I watched both seasons of Stranger Things in three days. I love The Party, Winona Ryder is fantastic, Jonathan/Nancy/Steve is my OT3 and I laughed myself silly over babysitter!Steve at the end of S2. He was having a very bad day.

Day 2

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.

First time I met fellow fans - Fall Out Boy show in Melbourne for their reunion tour. Computer glitch meant I missed a ticket for Sydney but shinetheway had an extra for Melbourne, another fan offered to host me and other fangirls and it was a terrific show (fun by yourself but better with friends) and a really fantastic experience. Everyone was so damn happy to be there!

*
Blessedly cool weather today. The dogs got a long walk - almost too long for Miss Shadow who was dragging her feet by the end. Had a long chat with friend Kitt, trying to organise a girl's day around the oncoming heat, while being diverted by all our usual conversational topics plus her newly crawling daughter faceplanting into her leg, twice.

Did some exercises, started a new book about Marco Polo, got interested, remembered it was due back at the library tomorrow, cursed, checked, not due until next week (yay!) made dinner, tossed some things, watched What We Do in the Shadows. Hilarious NZ vampire mockumentary directed by and starring Taika Waititi & Jemaine Clement. Waititi directed Thor: Ragnorok which I missed in cinemas and I'm even more annoyed about that now. He's hilarious in this. And I just watched Moana in which Clement voices Tamatoa the crab. I kept imagining Vladislav busting out with "SHINY!!!"

Good day, although we were supposed to meet a pony today. That may take a while now.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner 2018

Day 1
In your own space, talk about why you're participating in Snowflake and, if you’ve participated in the past, how the challenge has affected you. What drew you to it? What did you take away from it? What do you hope to accomplish this year? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I've participated in Snowflake on and off since the beginning but since it comes at one of the most exhausting times of the year for me (post-holidays, revolting summer heat) I've never participated as much as I'd like to. But I like seeing the fannish enthusiasm across fandoms and the challenges are always interesting. I'd like to get back to posting here and see some fannish activity away from Tumblr.

*
I often start January feeling better than expected, make grand plans for the new year then the heat gets even worse and all those lovely plans collapse around me. You think I'd learn. Little victories. I did some exercises today, tossed a few things, made dinner, tried a new hairstyle (Quick and Easy Braided Updo) that worked very well for the first try, and finished reading The Girl with All The Gifts by M.R. Carey. I'm not usually into zombie novels but I was reading Mira Grant's Newsflesh trilogy since the library didn't have the book of hers I was looking for and I absolutely loved it (cried all over the first book) and that led me to Carey. Creepier and bleaker but fascinating.
venetia_sassy: (Words // gone are the dogs)
I have been feeling like hell for the last ten days or so and I have no idea why. I was coping reasonably well with the heatwave but as soon as the temperature dropped, it was as though my body went, 'Oh, time to collapse.' Really not helpful.

Then on Saturday, it was the first farmer's market of the year (they usually don't hold any in January but due to how the dates worked out, there was only one in December.) I hadn't slept well and had a bit of a headache but we went along. I didn't have much money and it was a smaller market than usual so we didn't stay too long. The dogs had plenty of pats, we talked to a few people about greyhounds, bought two kinds of plums, some cherry truss tomatoes, milk and a chicken and peach bake for dinner. Then we came home, I fell into bed with a vicious headache, woke up with a headache, and I've basically been sleeping 8 hours, waking 8 hours (and not doing much because I'm so tired), sleeping 8 hours, since then.

I feel a bit better today, managed to take the dogs for a brief walk (Mum took them without me one day but they have been deprived they tell you, DEPRIVED, since Saturday.)

I would like to know what's going on here but there's probably nothing to know. *sigh*

*
At this point, I'm just going to post that Day 4 of Snowflake is done and that's that for the year. I'm glad I did some of it, at least.

Day 4

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

It doesn't have to be anything complex - it can be feedback for a fanwork or discussing something you might have in common or even simply admiring their icon. The point is to reach out to someone you normally wouldn't and connect with them, even if it's only for the briefest moment.
venetia_sassy: (SH // Gladstone oh no! dead dog?)
I did want to do the Snowflake Challenge again this year but what with the heat, exhaustion, my teeth, the heat ... time got away from me. But I do mean to do a few of the challenges at least.

Day One

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

1) I never want to make cakepops again but I am very proud of how the My Chemical Romance ones I made last year for [community profile] imadeathing turned out.

2) A post (that I actually made for Snowflake) about the O.C., Taylor Townsend, Taylor/Ryan and some of the show's best moments.

3) I was looking through some old fic posts and found a post of one sentence fics for CSI and CSI: NY. It was amazing how many emotions and memories those few words brought back. I might try doing some again.

Day 2

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them.

Hmm, I'll be going through the posts looking for more LJ/DW communities but I think I'll share some sites that make me laugh (even if it's in horror.)

1) The Bloggess - certainly on the fannish side herself, Jenny Lawson makes me laugh myself breathless, especially with her tales of her taxidermist father, her adventures in costuming (antique) taxidermied animals and the bizarre conversations she and her husband Victor wind up in. Jenny also deals with multiple chronic physical and mental health problems but still finds a way to laugh at life. I'm currently reading bits of Allie Brosh's Hyperbole and a Half. Last year I read Jenny's Let's Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir) and cried with laughter (THE TURKEY QUAILS!)

2) STFU, Parents - yes, I am currently childfree and am likely to remain so. However, I have zero hate for parents; that's not why I read this blog. It's an amazing look at overentitlement, oversharing and complete batshittery and a very good guide as to What Not to Post on Social Media. Have I been posting about Miss Shadow's dietary difficulties and the state of her poop? No, why would I? Good question. Read the blog.

3) OH! Happy Grey - I'm not on Facebook but there are several pages I check every day; this is one of them. Gorgeous and hilarious photos of sighthounds, mostly greyhounds, galgos, some whippets and Italian greyhounds and the occasional saluki, silken windhound, etc. They also post some links to greyhound rescues and articles on greyhound and galgo abuse and 'wastage', which there is far too much of, especially in Australia and Spain. But as the page title suggests, the main purpose of the page is to show the gorgeous, goofy natures of sighthounds!
venetia_sassy: (101 Dalmatians // happy puppies!)

Day 11

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favourite interview, a book) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

The O.C. was hardly a brilliant show but it had some fantastic moments, some heartbreaking moments, some hilarious moments - and many of the last involved Taylor Townsend (the gorgeous Autumn Reeser) who went from neurotic, possibly mean girl, socially awkward antagonist of S3 to the more confident and delightfully odd protagonist and love interest of S4.

I watched The O.C. casually during S1 but it became all too angsty and all drama, all the time, and I just can't deal with that. (If a show like that finally lets two characters get married, you can guarantee that either both will move away or one will have a nervous breakdown/get cancer/die. I start yelling at the screen, 'JUST LET THEM BE HAPPY FOR A FEW EPISODES, WHAT IS SO WRONG WITH THAT?!?!?!?!' Ahem. There was a reason I was so into procedurals for years, until I burnt out on the crime.)

But I watched the S3 finale to see how they'd write out Marissa (I cried, even though I didn't like her) and then watched the first couple of S4 episodes to see the reaction of the other characters. Once I'd stopped laughing incredulously (cage-fighting? Really?), I realised to my surprise that this odd, fast-talking character I'd barely been aware of had hooked me in. And the show was getting good again. And then it became awesome. And I found of my few OTPs in Ryan/Taylor. I went out, bought the first three seasons, watched them all, possibly killed brain cells on S2&3 (Summer was really the only redeeming feature), learned to my disgust that S4, the final season, was being cut short (we do not talk about the utter bullshit of the 'Ryan's dad' storyline okay? I can't remember if it was speculation or statement that it would have played out differently if the season hadn't unexpectedly been cut short but it was BULLSHIT. Otherwise, S4 was ridiculous magic. And feautured Ryan's biceps. Always a plus.) and watched the finale and sobbed happily at the utter fanservice of the flashbacks and final montage.

Below, I offer vids of some of the pivotal moments (and great music) of The O.C.  )

Also, Captain Oats/Princess Sparkle 4EVA!

venetia_sassy: (101 Dalmatians // happy puppies!)
Day 10

In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing. It can be a detailed, thoughtful analysis, or a squeeful, joyful post. Or maybe a combination of the two. Make a recs list, link to their archives or master lists or websites, maybe create a Fanlore page for them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

When I started reading Avengers fic, I was fortunate enough to stumble over [archiveofourown.org profile] scifigrl47's early on. Her stories are an amazingly addictive mix of crack, fluff and devastating emotion. Who knew a story about Steve instituting a chore roster, Tony ordering Roombas to get out of sweeping the kitchen floor and Stark Hugging Duty could be so touching?

AND THERE ARE SENTIENT FLYING ROOMBAS OKAY?!?! AND THE TOASTER IS FEUDING WITH THE BREADMAKER!!!

In Which Tony Stark Builds Himself Some Friends (But His Family Was Assigned by Nick Fury) and Phil Coulson's Case Files of the Toasterverse (or just 'the Toasterverse') are fantastic and they have two of the most delightfully adorable OCs ever in Drew and Shawn (I won't call Harris adorable, he might bite.) The emotion sneaks up on you in that verse but in Tales of the Bots it hits you right away. I cried in the first part of The Act of Creation Will Be Your Salvation when Tony creates his first successful AI. Oh Tony. Oh Dummy.

I still don't understand Tumblr (it seems like a very awkward place to have a conversation) but I keep track of scifigrl47 for the little one-shots and WIPs that haven't made their way to AO3 (I am so looking forward to the completion of Phil Coulson Was Not Grown in a Lab (He Has a Mom) but another fic has to be finished first.)

Her fics always make me laugh even when they've made me cry.
venetia_sassy: (101 Dalmatians // happy puppies!)
Day Nine

In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

A rec list!

During the worst months of my headaches haze last year, I fell down more than one fannish black hole in my efforts to distract myself (fanfic and rereads of Agatha Christie were my main sanity saviours last year.) Thanks to [community profile] fancake, love of [archiveofourown.org profile] harriet_vane's Bandom fic and my own need for fluff at that time, I managed to fall into reading Social Network RPF - despite never having seen the movie, having no desire to see the movie, and having only a vague idea that the Andrew guy was the crazy-haired new Spiderman? Maybe?

But there was fic filled with adorable boys being adorable and neurotic at each other, Emma being scarily awesome, Justin being drunk and awesome, and usually cats as well. Really, it was all so ridiculously sweet and exactly what I needed just then. So here are five fics that I read over and over again and will most likely continue to read over and over again when I need a smile, starting with the fic that started it all and finishing up with quite possibly THE MOST ADORABLE FIC OF ALL TIME. Even if you don't read it just check out the pictures. The giraffe! The little mouse! All the hearts!

Day 5

Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or consume different fanworks. Give that new fandom a go. Listen to a podfic or watch some vids if you haven’t before. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

1) Well, I read a Sentinel kink fic. I still have no idea what the show was about but the fic was good.

2) I listened to a podfic all the way through and while it was very well done, it confirmed my suspicion that podfic would not be my thing. I'm a very fast reader and I tend to skip back and forth as I'm reading as well. Podfic is just too slow for me and I can't see the whole page, the bigger picture. The only time I've enjoyed listening to an audiobook was when I was flying to the US and being trapped in an economy class seat for hours on end made reading difficult. But relaxing with my iPod and listening to Patrick Stewart reading A Christmas Carol? Excellent. I also listened to the BBC radio play of Much Ado About Nothing with David Tennant and it was hilarious (Mum said she was repeatedly startled by my snorts of laughter.)

I could see downloading podfic if I go on any long trips in the future but not as an every day thing.

3) I am being sucked in to Teen Wolf fandom via fanfic (I've already told[personal profile] jerakeen it's her fault - well, it started with [community profile] fancake and[community profile] fancake started with her so ...) and while shopping plans to get ahold of the DVDs have been delayed by weather (I should have just ordered them, they'd be here already), I thought I'd take a look at some vids and get an idea of what the characters really look like. Apart from a few stills of Derek and Stiles, I really had no idea.

... they do not look like teenagers.

Day 7

In your own space, share something non-fannish about yourself. A passion or a hobby or a talent, something that people might not know about you. We are more than just our fandoms. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I have vast quantities of jewellery. I get distracted by bookstores, kitchenware stores and jewellery stores. I tried doing jewellery parties for a while (which increased my collection!) but I really didn't have the contacts or the energy.

I tend to like delicate, somewhat unusual pieces and classics with a twist. I might wear a string of pearls one day and a silver dragon pendant the next (although I only wear jewellery when I go out.) I have two piercings in one ear and three in the other. I considered a nose piercing when I was younger - just a tiny, jewelled stud - but I build scar tissue very easily.

I have four rings that I wear as my standard set - a twist of gold and silver my dad gave me for my 16th birthday, a gold and emerald ring he gave me for my 18th, a narrow gold band set with pearls and diamonds that belonged to my great-grandmother and that my mother gave me on my 21st birthday, and a silver and amethyst ring that has always been my favourite of Mum's rings. But it doesn't fit over her knuckle any more (little finger) so she gave it to me, saying, 'Why wait?' I wear it on my right ring finger.

Day 8

In your own space, talk about setting yourself a fannish goal. Big or small, it doesn't matter. Some examples: complete a bingo, sign up for a Big Bang, write that fic you've been thinking about for years, podfic that story that you love, make a fanmix for your fandom, post that bit of meta or reclist you keep putting off. Maybe resolve to be better at leaving feedback or answering comments. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Two things:

I would like to post at least one drabble per month. Or not!fic. Something.

I would like to go back and answer any comments I've haven't replied to over the last twelve months. I feel kind of stupid doing that because people will look at their inbox and go 'wTH? When was that from?' But I really do appreciate being able to say something online and get a response even if making the initial post was as far as I could go at the time. It's a lot better than just talking to myself! Or the dog. Sweet as he is, his conversation is not exactly scintillating.

(The cat probably makes marvelously acidic comments but since I don't speak Feline ....)

venetia_sassy: (MLP // shake it off)

It's hot. And there are bugs. At least the Christmas beetle season seems to be over? *eyes windows warily* (Mum doesn't mind them but I tell her I don't want the damn things zooming around me, hitting my arms or tangling in my hair and startling me while I'm trying to cook! I don't want them landing in the food either. They haven't done so yet but they've landed on the stove and in the sink multiple times.)

It should be, we took the Christmas decorations down today. *sadface* Well, Mum dismantled the tree this morning, before it got too hot, and left the ornaments for me too pack away this evening after it cooled down (so about 10p.m.)

Snowflake Challenge Day 3 - working on it!

Snowflake Challenge Day 4

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

I was honestly drawing a blank on this - it's just too bloody hot for thinking - but then I realised I had a couple of questions for my flist/circle re: [community profile] imadeathing and hey, I had a fic prompt last year I'd still love to see ...

1) What photohosting site would you recommend? I'll need to post some pics of my [community profile] imadeathing projects plus I'd like to start posting some photos here as well.

2a) When you think of Mikeyway, what are the first two or three colours that come to mind?

2b) When you think of Ray Toro, what are the first two or three colours that come to mind?

3) I'd love to read this as a fic.

I think I was reading AlwaysAGirl!Gee/Frank when I had an image of a girl!Frank that I hadn't yet come across. Imagine Danger Days-era Gee/girl!Frankie having kids. Pregnant Frankie slouching around in hoodies she steals from the guys, hair getting longer and wavier than it has since she was a kid and looking remarkably soft and glowing and Madonna-like (when she's not feeling huge and tired and queasy and dammit, she has to pee again.)

Then the babies (I keep thinking twins) are born and it's exhausting and amazing and they do the Killjoys vids with Frankie's hair in funky braids or something. But at some point after that, she realises that babies like to grab. And pull. And ow, it hurts, okay?! So she shaves her head. Much less fuss all around. And she tries to convince Gee that he could shave his hair off too! (It doesn't work. And the babies like his bright hair, okay?)

But that's the image that I had - shaven-headed Frankie carrying her babies around. I think she'd look fabulous!

Sort of 4) And I still have lots of my Psy-Changeling/Bandom fusion written down and in my head. I'm hoping that as the headaches improve, the brainfog will also improve and I'll be able to do something with it, including talk to people about it. Same with my original fic, too ...

venetia_sassy: (Images // tea)

I was looking over my posts for the Snowflake Challenge last year and thinking how much fun it was but also, 'wow, I really was feeling a lot better then than I am right now!' At the same time, I could also see the first warning signs of what was ahead. Feh.

Well, I know I'm not going to manage to do every day's challenge this year but I do want to do some at least. Sooo ...

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

Last year, I inadvertently wound up creating a crossover recs post. This year I found myself doing the same thing. I have no idea why. I just started out looking for non-Bandom fics to rec since most of my flist knows them all already. Or wrote them. *g*

The Case of the Unwelcome Owl by [archiveofourown.org profile] FayJay (Sherlock x Harry Potter)

"So," said John, feeling out of his depth once again. "An owl." It was the same mild, politely curious tone of voice with which he had previously found himself uttering such things as: "So – three bags of frozen AB negative," and "So – a selection of human ears."

"Goodness, John, with deductive prowess like that you'll soon be putting me in the shade," Sherlock said tartly. "Can't sneak anything past you, can we?"

Sherlock receives an invitation from his favourite cousin. John continues to think his roommate is an alien. I laugh every time.

Lions and Tigers by [archiveofourown.org profile] Starlingthefool (Inception x Calvin and Hobbes)

What were you like as a kid?” Eames asks him.
“Quiet,” Arthur says. “I lived in my head a lot. You?”
“I did too,” Eames replies. “Only I was never quiet about it.”

Eames is who Calvin grew up to be. I love it. I love Calvin's mum. I love Hobbes. I read this before I even saw Inception and I loved it.

Fascinating New Thing by [archiveofourown.org profile] kashmir (Inception x 10 Things I Hate About You)

One day, Arthur runs into someone from his past.

Kat is more than happy to dish the dirt on Cameron's - excuse me, Arthur's - high school days to his new guy. I'm still not sure about the play but I loved this movie and this little crossover is sweet.

Carrying Dangerous Goods by [archiveofourown.org profile] novembersmith (Generation Kill x Temeraire)

From the Signal Code of the Royal Navy and His Majesty's Aerial Corps: B, or Bravo -- I am taking in, or discharging, or carrying dangerous goods.

Technically a crossover but reads as more of a fusion. I haven't seen GK but I've read Temeraire. I don't know if it's necessary to have read the books to appreciate the awesome of the dragons though. The whole fic is worth it for Bravo and the dragon bawdy song.

The Secret of Dragon Ranch by [archiveofourown.org profile] winterhill (X-Men: First Class x My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic)

MLP fusion for the XM Reverse Bang 2012. Ironhooves has been a prisoner on Dragon Ranch all his life when he finally escapes and goes searching for somepony special to help him defeat the evil dragons and save his Mama. Professor Oxford Blue might just be that special somepony. Lots of fluff and ponies pining after one another.

How does this work? HOW?

My Little Pony-Wolves: The Continuing Adventures of Stiles by [archiveofourown.org profile] Jade_Dragoness (Teen Wolf x My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic)

I'm going to stop now.

Day 14

In your own space, ask for help. Need a beta? Always wanted to learn how to make a vid? a fanmix? icons? Maybe you’d want to have someone cheering for you while you work on an upcoming big bang or fannish bingo?

Already asked. *g* And thank you so much to the people who responded!

Day 15

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.

I still remember my sheer delight at finding Dark Angel fanfic. That must have been ... 2002? 2003? Not sure when it aired here. Good grief, where did the time go ... I'd gone online hoping that what I'd heard about cancellation wasn't true. Well, it was but I found someone writing a virtual Season 3. And there was Max/Alec fic! And then I found fanfic for the promising but infuriating Roswell (including Michael/Liz fic!) and fanfic for the awesome but horrifically programmed Farscape ...

It took a good 3-4 years before I worked up the nerve to interact with any of these crazy-talented people who all seemed to know each other. And I've always had a tendency to drop back into lurkerdom. But fandom's been a part of my life for about a decade now (ye gods) and I still remember how amazing it was to find out that other people made up their own stories based on tv shows. Holy shit! It's not just me!

“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, 'What! You too? I thought I was the only one.”
~ C. S. Lewis

Imagination. Enthusiasm. Encouragement. Delight. That says fandom to me.

Day 12

In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you think would make a good intro into XYZ fandom. Rec a fandom overview, a introductory picspam, stories that define and shape the fandom.

Hmm, well, a few days ago when I was thinking about how I fell into RPF, I started thinking about how much I loved Prison Break fandom. Reading msgenevieve's amazing Michael/Sara fics led me into reading her amazing Wenthworth Miller/Sarah Wayne Callies fic (and it all went from there.)

But oh, Prison Break was fantastic. It was also completely insane, made no sense most of the time and had plot holes you could drive a truck through (genius architect gets himself arrested and thrown into maximum security gaol to break out his brother who's on death row for a murder he didn't commit. Tattoo fans take note - Michael has the entire plan tattooed on his torso.) But what made it so amazing for me? Hero Doctor Sara aka Dr. Sara Tancredi. When I first heard of the show and idly watched the first few episodes, I thought 'oh, check out the blatant love interest - pretty young female doctor in all-male prison. Hah.' And soon gave up watching. My mistake. Because when I caught the first couple of S2 episodes, I fell head over heels.

Pretty female doctor, recovering morphine addict (who relapses in S1), Governor's daughter, principled, moral, holding on to sobriety with both hands - and falling in love with an inmate, becoming an inadvertent part of his escape plan and then she's on the run as well.

I maintain that Prison Break ended when the cuffs came off in the S2 finale. S3 never happened and S4 was just providing us with some AU Michael/Sara footage. But there was some fantastic canon and some brilliant fic.

I was trying to find some of the S1&2 vids but not having much luck. But watch these two and see if you can not fall in love.

This vid shows more of their relationship - not just the kissing *g* - but it also has spoilers (although with Prison Break ... don't believe everything you see.) I just beamed watching this because these two weren't supposed to fall in love, went through sheer hell, together and separately - and they made it through.

Michael & Sara ~ It Only Hurts

For fic recs:

I said I'm not keen on prison fic and that holds true - I much prefer post-escape fic.

Trick of the Light - AU post-S1 - The first time she thinks she sees him, she blames the complimentary Mai Tais.

The epic Full Circle 'verse, an AU of S2 that incorporates all the best bits of canon.

The bittersweet Surrogates by[livejournal.com profile] saestina- Sara and LJ are the ones left to pick up the pieces.

The triumphant return of kickass Doctor Sara! Not Some Paradise by[personal profile] eatsscissors

Day 13

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favourite interview, a book) and explain why you love it so much.

"When you first take the job, they tell you never to fall in love with an inmate..."

See those two gorgeous people above? Let's count my favourite bits of canon - the origami flower, the hand porn (x2!), the infirmary kiss, the phone call, the reunion hug, the train kiss ... some of the best couple canon out there. I tried to find individual clips but they don't seem to be around anymore.

"It was real, Sara. You and me, it's real."

(Oh fuck me, I nearly lost this whole post. *deep breaths*)

venetia_sassy: (MCR // Best smiles!)

I woke up this morning and went "... huh. I feel alive again!" Okay, the headache returned last night with a vengeance and I didn't fall asleep until 8:30a.m. or wake up until 5p.m. but when I woke up I felt better. Still headache-y but far more alert. I immediately wanted to do All The Things and had to remind myself that doing so would render me unable to do Anything At All the next day.

When I have a bad week like this, I try to just deal with it but part of me is always going, oh fuck, is it a relapse, what did I do, oh fuck, oh fuck, it's not getting better, is this my new normal, oh fuck, was this already my normal and I was just being delusional, oh fuck.

And then I woke up today and felt better. And I was very relieved.

On a lighter note:

Day 11

In your own space, ask for recs. Something as simple as "I like XYZ (where XYZ is a kink, a pairing, a trope, etc) - please rec me some."

Any recs for Bandom genderswap? (Not sexswap.) ETA: Didn't mean to be confusing! I meant I'd like 'always-a-girl', not 'woke-up-a-girl' recs. This masterlist led me to some fantastic fics but it hasn't been updated since 2008. So if you know of something more recent, that would be excellent! MCR is my main preference for this but other bands welcome.

venetia_sassy: (Adam // glitter and stars)

In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing.

I was going to go back and talk about the authors who corrupted me introduced me to RPF (many thanks to msgenevieve and[personal profile] eatsscissors) but I'm tired and my head hurts and I'm having trouble thinking, let alone writing (I could barely read yesterday *shudders*) and I'm feeling a little cranky about things.

So here are some authors for my first real RPF ship who consistently make me smile. Plus, well, Kris and Adam manage to be pretty consistently adorable all by themselves.

ETA: Why does DW hate it when I link usernames?! Why?!

jerakeen  - with crossdressing Southern belles, cute kids, and dinosaurs interrupting dates. Also, baby unicorns in the Forbidden Forest.

astolat  - with bets and best friends and threesomes and daemons

arasigyrn - with fairy!Kris and kitsune!Kris and dragon!Kris and the most adorable of all, unicorn!Kris.

*snuffles* I need more tea. You do not want to know how long it took me just to write that.

venetia_sassy: (MCR // Best smiles!)

In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something.

Okay, lately I've been trying to kickstart my writing by trying to write a little fic (original or fanfic) for every non-fiction book I read ...  the bandom boys do keep showing up.

I have some sailor!Bob/mapmaker!Mikey (iceberg dancing!) & naturalist!Gerard/explorer!Frank (hypothermia!) on the way. When I reread Evolution's Captain, I tried to see if I could write some captain!Bob/naturalist!Gerard for turlough ... didn't work but I did manage a little bit of Lieutenant!Bob/artist!Gerard.

423 words of historical fluff, not to be taken seriously. *g*

Not What He Signed On For )
venetia_sassy: (MLP // shake it off)
In your own space, talk about a talent (or talents) you have. Everyone's got something they're good at.

It's odd but I have trouble figuring out what I'm good at, largely because I have so little chance to compare what I can do with others so I don't know if I'm good, okay, terrible (alright, that's usually self-evident!) But if I can do something, I generally assume that anyone can do it. Sometimes I find out that this not true.

I do know I'm a good cook. I know I've improved in confidence and skill since I first took over the household cooking about five years ago. I like being competent at cooking because there's so little that I can do, physically and mentally, but I can do this most of the time. Tonight, I made coriander chicken with walnuts and apple coleslaw. Very good for a warm evening.

Speaking of being competent at something, I was very pleased to learn last year and year before last, that I am capable of putting (mostly Ikea) furniture together. I can set up TVs, sound systems, etc. Some things though, I will gladly leave to professionals (but I wouldn't mind having a little more knowledge of how computers work.)
venetia_sassy: (Words // levels of insanity)
In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

Ummm. I had to think about this. Um.

1) There's a plotbunny or just a plotimage that came to me a while back. I seriously doubt I'll ever write it but I'd love to see it written!

2) Suggestions on where to find good Panic icons.

I've found a few from early days but I haven't found more recent ones that I like. (MCR, on the other hand ... I've found plenty!)

3) A beta. Or someone willing to listen to fic babble.

I've never had a beta and I suspect one of the things that frustrates me in my writing in general is not having people to talk to about it. I can talk to myself constantly - and get surprising variations in answers sometimes - but there are times when it really feels like beating my head against a brick wall. It's kind of like my senior years of high school, then uni - isolation didn't worry me much in earlier years but as you go on there are ideas that need discussion to help you understand them.

Writing feels rather like that at times.
venetia_sassy: (MCR // Frank SMILES!)

In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) and that you ended up loving.

Um. This took a while. If I'm dubious about a fic and I wind up not liking it, I forget about it. If I'm dubious but wind up loving it, then the second reaction is what I associate with it. But eventually I remembered a few. I'm still trying to remember the first RPF fic I read though ... once upon a time that was a line for me!

1) arsenicjade's Discipline and Punish prison-verse.

Prison fic is rarely my thing (angst, non-con, drugs, etc) but this was arsenicjade. So I read it and fell in love with the Epic Love Story of Mikey & Frank. And Bob & Gee, Tommy & Alex ... seeing them picking up the pieces, learning to stand on their own but also learning to take help when it's offered ... oh yeah, h/c. I do skip some of the more graphic stuff in my rereads though. I read it once, that was enough.

2) moku_youbi's runaway Christmas elf!Brendon GSF, with Frank/Gerard sequel.

What. Christmas elf. The fuck? But it's gorgeous. From the beginning with Ryan/Spencer, then Ryan/Spencer/Jon, then Ryan/Spencer/Jon Brendon. Followed by another runaway Christmas elf, Frank, joining his best friend Brendon's band, Northern Downpour, and meeting his Epic Crush, Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance. Yay for dreams come true!

3) And from way back - stellaluna_'s CSI:NY Stella/Flack fic Twist (foot fetish)

I remember being surprised at finding the kink in this hot because foot fetish - not my thing. But the way it was written with Stella trying to understand and enjoy Flack's kink was excellent. And at that point I realised that it was the writing of the connection and not the kink that was the most important to me.

venetia_sassy: (Images // reading)
Day 3 - done! Day 4 - working on it! Done!

Day 5

In your own space, share something non-fannish you are passionate about with your fannish friends.

The word passionate kind of throws me. There are times when I'm envious of people who can find something they love and sustain a long-term, focused interest in it. That's more what I think of as passionate. I tend to drift from interest to interest, unable to main a long-term focus (granted, brain fog has something to do with that.)

Cooking? Yes, I like cooking, I like being competent at cooking, I like trying new foods, I like collecting recipes. But I listen to people who are really passionate about food ... and that's not quite me. I guess my longest term interest, something that I don't even think of seeing as a passion because it's just a part of me, is reading.

It utterly baffles me that there are people who don't have bookshelves (including, until recently, my brother and sister-in-law.) I was an avid reader from an early age; developing CFS and winding up mostly housebound only encouraged my readaholic tendencies. I never go a day without reading some kind of book. I tend to walk around the house not looking where I'm going because I'm reading (which is fine provided Mum doesn't rearrange the furniture) and I can do many tasks one-handed because I work with a book in the other hand. The times when the brain fog has been so bad that I couldn't read anything remotely complicated or even new were horrid.

What kind of books do I read? Well, back when we had Borders, a visit there would involve a look at fantasy & sci-fi, romance, crime, classics, maybe YA and very occasionally general fiction. Non-fiction? HISTORY! Sociology, religion, biography, science, but in the end it boils down to history. Not the grand, sweeping view but the personal. The daily lives of people in other times and places, how they thought and worshiped and ate and fought. I like to be able to understand why people acted the way they did and you need to know about all of their life before you can. Not always possible but I like to try. (It's possibly why I increasingly have very little interest in current news - it's so ephemeral and how do you sort out what's important in the long-term?)

I haven't posted my reading round-up from last year yet (I don't know why I stopped doing monthly posts. *frowns*) but going by Goodreads, I read at least 119 new books, fiction and non-fiction. Reread at least 60 others, probably more.

I'm not even going to guess at my to-read pile. And I don't think I have a lot of books, really ...
