Much the usual at the market, Mum found what she wanted at the shops, we found a lovely book for Nephew #1 at the children's bookshop and a birthday or Christmas present for Nephew #1 at the excellent toyshop. I also found a hedgehog.

A soft, fluffy, palm-sized creature who looks like he want to give you a hug. He is adorable and I shall call him William.

Apparently so! But before that fic I had no idea, I thought they were basically mini-echidnas. Attractive in their own way but perhaps not adorable.

I've never realised what a distinctly European animal the hedgehog is before. They don't even have them in the Americas I just saw when I wikied it.

They don't? Huh. Oh wait, they have porcupines! Seems like every continent needs its spiked creature!

It is weird to think how exotic our native animals might look to others, isn't it? To me, European animals are the kind of creatures you see in high fantasy novels or classic children's books.
