Mushrooms, yoghurt and catfights
Aug. 18th, 2011 11:09 pmHad the mushrooms tonight, in this mixed mushroom risotto. Mum loves it, I ... like it well enough. Mostly in spite of the mushrooms than because of them, I think. The mixed bag of exotic mushrooms had some of almost all the mushrooms on this page.
The black wood ear are disconcerting. The first time they showed up in the bag, I called Mum into the kitchen to take a look at them. They're shiny on one side and look almost like velvet on the other but they feel slick and kind of rubbery. Mum's reaction? 'They look kind of like baby bats'. Oh thanks, Mum. Now whenever I cut those ones up, I feel like I'M CUTTING UP BABY BAT'S WINGS, OMG.

Also tonight, yoghurt with passionfruit, both from the market. The passionfruit is fairly acidic but it's still good with the yoghurt which is the star.
I don't like yoghurt. I don't like the tang or the almost sour flavour of plain yoghurt. And sweetened yoghurt or fruit yoghurt tends to be sickeningly sweet over the tang. Blegh. However, there is a stall at the market that sells lightly sweetened, incredibly creamy, almost tang-free yoghurt that is so good. Mum gets the plain stuff, I get this. There used to be a stall selling flavoured honey (honey is another thing I don't like much but I think a lot of that is due to supermarket stuff) including butterscotch honey. A drizzle of that over the yoghurt? Amazing. Add a few sliced strawberries? Sheer bliss. They haven't been at the market in months, I know they're still in business so I'll have to find another stockist. I miss having a tiny bit of the honey in my tea.

I don't always talk about food this much.

The cat apparently got into a fight today and came home with blood around his eyes. Somehow, despite the scratches at the edge of his eyes, there doesn't seem to be any eye damage. But one eyelid is already looking puffy so it's the vet for him in the morning. Won't he be thrilled.
(We're wondering who the hell he found to fight with. We thought he'd well and truly intimidated all the cats in the area. There's a reason we don't have second cat.)
